support_imageWe Need Your Help! One in seven people living in New York City have a learning disability. Nearly 11% of New Yorkers struggle daily with learning issues. This includes more than 750,00 older teens, young adults and adults.

Learning issues do not go away and have the potential to create lifelong challenges with education, work, community, relationships and everyday life. While in school, students are entitled to services to assist with their learning disabilities. However, these services can be inadequate or students with learning disabilities can go undiagnosed.

When LD students leave high school, public support for assistance programs almost completely disappears.  Immediately, most of their lives start down a path where they are destine to struggle.

  • 39% of students with LD drop out of high school without a general diploma. (National Center for Learning Disabilities)
  • Only 13% of students with LD attend a 4-year post-secondary program within 2 years of leaving high school. (National Center for Learning Disabilities)
  • Only 46% students with LD had regular paid employment within two years of leaving school. (The National Longitudinal Transition Study-2)

LDANYC can help people struggling with LD change their lives with our three cornerstone programs – Educational Readiness, Job Readiness and Life Readiness – but we need your help.

Lives Changed

After months of feeling frustrated with the City’s agencies, my family helped me to reach out to LDANYC.  I was greeted with personal attention and helpful career coaching.  In the past, I had tried automotive training, but found that line of work stressful.  Recently, I have volunteered with the ASPCA doing animal care, but I have realized that I want to work in an office environment.  With the coaching and training I am receiving through Career Transitions, many areas of skills are improving: communication, computer and office/information management.  As an adult with LD, I feel glad that the team at LDANYC has assisted me in choosing a career sector that I can find both interest and success in.
