Dyslexia Therapists

Children with dyslexia need specialized assistance in reading and academics. These often come in the form of reading support programs, which may be available in schools, community centers, and via private therapy.

Dyslexia therapists or dyslexia counselors are specialist professionals who provide therapy and instruction for children with dyslexia. Most, but not all, operate in an educational or childcare setting.

Licensed dyslexia counselors are equipped to carry out advanced treatment programs, while unlicensed dyslexia counselors (who often also hold teacher certifications) can also play an important supportive role in instructing children with dyslexia to read and manage their learning.

What do they do?

Dyslexia counselors are responsible for designing and executing support services and therapy for children with dyslexia. They work closely with the teachers, parents, and community members linked to the child to ensure collaborative progress and development.

A dyslexia counselor may start treatment by first doing an evaluation session to understand the strengths and areas of improvement in the child’s reading and learning ability. Based on the outcome, he or she will create a personalized support plan that may involve a specific reading instruction model such as the Orton-Gillingham (OG) approach.

Once treatment has started, he/she will carefully monitor the performance of the child as well as record milestones and progress. The treatment will end with a final evaluation that may involve feedback from the child’s parents and teachers.

Training

Dyslexia therapists are therapy professionals who need to undergo specialized training before they can practice. This additional training can be done following the completion of a bachelor’s degree, but many who opt to specialize in dyslexia treatment hold Master’s degrees in Teaching, Education, or Psychology.

Dyslexia therapy training programs can last roughly two years and will equip therapists with both the theory and application of specific therapeutic programs. Following training, the individual could then become eligible to apply for a license within their state.
